"Follow His Guidance And Profit By His Preaching..."

The article published by 'pioneer' at the time of His passing away gives some idea of Shrimadji's life, which can be seen from the following extracts.

"At the age of twenty He completely disappeared from the public gaze.

He determined to use His powers and abilities for the instruction and enlightenment of His community and the people at large.

From His very early age He was a voracious reader.

He studied the six schools of religions (Shatdarshan) and other systems of Oriental and western philosophy.

Strange though it may seem, it was a fact that a book was required to be read only once in order to be digested, and without any regular study of Sanskrit and Prakrit, He could accurately understand works in those languages and explain them to others, as only learned scholars could be expected to do."

"Shrimadji now began to inculcate His taste for knowledge in others and soon attracted a large number of disciples, whom He guided to the proper study of jain philosophy.

He found that the Acharyas (religious teachers) of the time held narrow and sectarian views and did not appreciate the change of the times."

"Again, those who renounced the world were generally lacking in some of the good things of the world, and had some reason or other to be dissatisfied with their slot in the world.

Such men could not impress their congregations by their examples. He believed that if a man of wealth, social position, renounced the world, He could work real good by his example; convinced of His sincerity and disinterestedness, the people would more readily follow His guidance and profit by His preaching.

Holding such views, He had believed that He had not sufficiently qualified himself to appear before the public as an ascetic and a spiritual guide, and He continued steadily a man of the world, though His inclinations were all the other way."

"You Have The Enlightened In Front Of You And Still You Are Not Awake..."

In the evening Shrimadji used to go for a walk and to come back at about 10 pm.

At times Motilal also used to accompany him.

While walking accordingly Shrimadji once told him, "Why are you indulging in indolence? The right path is now strewn with thorns; our soul knows how much effort had to be made to remove those thorns.

Had there been an enlightened being, we would have pursued him; you have the enlightened in front of you and still you are not awake.

Remove the indolence and get awake.

When I had been the last pupil of Lord Mahavir, I had indulged in slight indolence and as a result I had to take all these births.

The worldly souls, however, do not worry at all even while living with too much indolence.

It is very hard for them to recognize the enlightened being in front of them..."

"He Continually Tried To Remain Unknown..."

The life sketch of Shrimadji published by 'pioneer' states as under.

"When He was twenty-one, He took to business and in a very short period He gained the credit of being a capable jeweller.

The cares of flourishing business, however, did not keep Him away from the philosophical study, which was at His heart.

While remaining in business He was quietly increasing His treasure of knowledge.

He always stayed in the midst of books.

Moreover, for a few months in a year He used to go out of Bombay instructing His firm that no one should correspond with Him unless He wrote for that.

He used to resort to solitary life in the forests of Gujarat and spend days and weeks in contemplation and meditation.

He continually tried to remain unknown so that no one would identify Him or the place of His resort.

Still He was frequently identified and large number of people used to follow Him with eagerness to listen His teachings."

"The Concept Of Loving Even a Murderer..."

"On November 15 1921 Gandhiji said from the chairmanship of Shrimad Rajchandraji's birthday celebrations in Ahmedabad,

'My contact with Raichandbhai was not for one day.

I exactly remember the house, where i had been soon after landing at Bombay by the end of June 1891.

Dr. Mehta and Rewashankar Jagjivan introduced me to him.

From that time our contact remained very close till the end of his life.

I have written several times that i have taken a lot from many people, but the maximum I have taken is from the life of Shrimadji.

Even the religion of compassion I have learnt from His life...

He taught me the concept of loving even a murderer.

I have drunk from Him the bowlfuls of that concept.

He frequently used to say, 'I can bear, if someone pierces knives all over the body, but it is not possible to bear the lies, intrigues and wickedness going on in the world, to bear the knife of irreligion prevailing in the name of religion.'

I have seen Him several times boiling over the brutality.

For Him the entire universe was like a relation.

The grief, which we experience on witnessing the death of our brother or sister, occurred to Him on seeing the misery of the world."

"Shrimadji Possessed All The Qualities Of GOD..."

"Many a times, we have found that when a great person passes away His message is forgotten in a very short span of time.

In case of ‘Param Krupaludev’ Shrimad Rajchandraji it is just the opposite - even in this era, which they call Kalyug.

During His lifetime only 5-25 people knew that He possessed all the qualities of God, but today after a century of His departure, lakhs of people know Him and worship Him like God through the medium of ‘Vachanamrut’.

Today not only in India but people from all over the world including the most advanced countries such as America and Britain follow with devotion and faith, the Spiritual Path as preached by Him!

Shrimadji's life profile and prolific caliber has given several people the key to immortality.

The manner in which Shri Krishna guided Arjun on the battlefield, similarly in this era when we are entangled in our tensions and problems on the battlefield of our karmas, His teachings show us the way to inner peace.

Shrimadji's state of almost complete Knowledge and oneness with the true nature of ‘Self’ is what we have to strive to achieve!

We all have the potential to become self-enlightened; it is only that we do not know the process.

This process can be understood only from a Living Experienced Soul.

Shrimad Rajchandraji achieved the ultimate state of oneness of 'Knowledge' (Gyan), 'Faith' (Darshan) and 'Conduct' (Charitra)! and His teachings give us the realization that the right balance and combination of Detachment (Gyan) and Surrender (Devotion) attained through a “Living Self-Realised (Experienced) Soul” is the only real and true medium to achieve that state..."

"May all the living beings of this world be blessed with a favour by such self-realized souls:"

"Could Not Be Done Without The Internal Purity..."

"Shrimadji's brother in law Chaturbhujbhai has written, 'Before proceeding to Bombay Shrimadji had been to Jetpur.

That time He had shown the capacity of identifying, from the shape of the head, the hand with which one ties the turban.

While sitting in the shop, He could indicate the right or left bind of the turban by looking at the uncovered head of the person standing outside.

After giving such identification for 15 persons, the next one was a patel.

Sheth Ghela Kanji had advised him in advance that he should deny the use of the hand, which Shrimadji indicated and should say that he tied the turban with the other hand.

As he did accordingly, Shrimadji asked him to tie the turban with that hand.

As he started doing it oddly, it was evident to everyone that he had lied.

The spectators were much amazed to notice that and they asked Shrimadji how he could make it out.

Shrimadji replied that by bringing the shape within, it gives the signal towards right or left and hence it is possible to indicate it.

He had clarified that it could not be done without the internal purity and cannot be learnt by being taught..."

"A Higher State Of Existence..."

Shrimadji said about "The Ideal House-holder..."

"A wise layman resorts to spiritual means even while staying as a house-holder; his family life is also therefore considered praiseworthy.

He performs Samayik (practice of equanimity), undertakes atonement and observes the vow of avoiding food-drinks after sunset as well as such other restraints.

He treats other's wives as mothers or sisters.

He gives donations to the utmost possible extent.

He speaks in a quiet, sweet and pleasing manner.

He contemplates over the contents of right scriptures.

To the extent possible he does not resort to fraud, deception etc. even for the sake of livelihood.

He gives due respect to the parents, wife, sons, monks and Guru.

He extends essence of religion to the parents.

He takes care that vigilance is observed in the household activities like cleaning, cooking, storing, bed spreading, etc.

While behaving carefully he teaches the wife and sons to be courteous and religious.

He encourages the sense of unity in the entire family.

He receives and treats the guests with due respect.

He does not send away beggar without giving food. he keeps contact with saintly people and adopts their teaching.

He always behaves within limits and remains contended.

He maintains scriptural texts in the home to the extent possible.

He maintains the life with a low level of activities.

The enlightened people state that such a family-life leads to a higher state of existence..."(12)

"The Body Is Like a Garment To The Soul..."

Shrimad Rajchandraji's Reply to Gandhiji's Questions

Gandhiji asked... "It is said that after death, a man may, according to his actions, be reborn as an animal, a tree or even a stone.
Is this fact ?

Shrimadji replied... "After the soul has left the body, it attains a state according to the merit it has earned through its actions; hence, it may be born even as a lower creature, or may have even to assume a body of earth (probably as a particle of organic matter in the earth) and, devoid of the other four senses, suffer the fruits of its karma (through the sense of touch alone.)

This does not mean, however, that it becomes pure stone or earth.

The soul assumes a body of stone, but, even then, it exists as soul, though its existence is not manifest to us.

Since, in that condition, the other four senses are unmanifest, the soul may be described as having an earth-body.

In the course of time, the soul leaves such a body after it has enjoyed the fruits of its karmas and then the stone material exists merely as atoms and, because the soul has left it, does not possess the instinct of food, etc.

In other words, the idea is not that stone itself, which is pure matter, becomes a soul.

It is in order to enjoy the fruits of those karmas which, because of their hard nature, compels the soul to take on a body possessing only one sense, the sense of touch, the other senses remaining unmanifest, that it is born in an earth-body; it does not, however, become pure earth or stone.

The body is like a garment to the soul, and is not its essence..."

"Words To Remember" Shrimad Rajchandraji

1) In a way regulation is the ruling principle of this world.

2) One, who makes out the secret of saintly people's behavior, becomes godly.

3) Fickleness of mind is the root cause of all gruesome miseries.

4) Coming across too many people and too much intimacy with a few are equally harmful.

5) Coming in contact with those of identical temperament is treated as aloneness by the enlightened beings.

6) You will get happiness, bliss and superb state by overcoming the sense-organs instead of feeling happy by getting overcome by them.

7) There is no worldly life without attachment and no attachment without the worldly life.

8) Total renouncement at young age confers the supreme state.

9) Try to contemplate over what is beyond the senses.

!0) Develop the inclination for qualities of the virtuous.

"It Is Possible To Experience The State Of Moksha Even While Living..."

Shrimad Rajchandra's Reply to Gandhiji's Questions

Gandhiji asked... "Is it possible for a person to know for certain, while he is still living, whether or not he will attain moksha?"

Shrimadji replied... "If our arms are tied with a rope wound several times round them and if the twists of the rope are loosened one after another, we feel the loosening of each twist and in the end become conscious of the rope having been removed.

In like manner as the innumerable bonds, the products of ignorance, which bind the atman loosen one by one, the latter becomes conscious of progressing towards moksha, and when the bonds are about to fall off, the atman shines forth with the light of its essence and knows beyond doubt that it is about to be delivered from the bonds of ignorance.

While still dwelling in this body, it comes out of the state of ignorance, etc., and becomes conscious of its pure essence and of its absolute otherness and freedom from all relations.

In other words, it is possible to experience the state of moksha even while living..."

"Best Means For Removing The Ego..."

"Thinking is the principal factor in gaining enlightenment.

Vairagya (absence of attachment towards worldly pleasures) and Upasham (very low defilement, disaffection for it) are the two pillars for rise of thinking.

As such, one should continually keep them in mind and bring out that state.

Thinking does not generally arise without appropriately assimilating the words of saints.

That assimilation occurs by uniquely and devoutly resorting to the shelter of the saint, because conviction about him is incomparably helpful in getting the beneficence.

...For a true liberation-seeker, the devout shelter of a saint serves as the best means for removing the ego and bringing out the thinking state within a short time.(706)

"How Can It Be Right For You..."

Shrimad Rajchandraji's reply to Gandhiji's Questions

Gandhiji asked..."If a snake is about to bite me, should I allow myself to be bitten or should I kill it, supposing that, that is the only way in which I can save myself?"

Shrimadji replied..."One hesitates to advise you that you should let the snake bite you.

Nevertheless, how can it be right for you, if you have realized that the body is perishable, to kill, for protecting a body which has no real value to you, a creature which clings to it with love ?

For anyone who desires his spiritual welfare, the best course is to let his body perish in such circumstances.

But how should a only person who does not desire spiritual welfare behave ?

My only reply to such a question is, how can i advise such a person that he should pass through hell and similar worlds, that is, that he should kill the snake ?

If the person lacks the culture of Aryan character, one may advise him to kill the snake, but we should wish that neither you nor I will even dream of being such a person..."

"The Worldly Attachment Causes The Obstruction..."

"The worldly attachment raises obstructions every moment.

Retreat from its heat lies in the shade of the desire-yielding tree or in the state of omniscience.

The former is adorable; without that there is no retreating from the heat.

For recognizing the desire-yielding tree one needs to be worthy of it.

The worldly attachment causes the obstruction in that regard.

That obstruction does not give way unless one tries to minimize the attachment.

In the hazardous state of ignorance the worldly soul has been moving millions of miles without giving any thought.

How can that give any scope of worthiness?

In order to avoid that, it is necessary to calm down, to the extent possible, the affliction resulting from the activities undertaken, to retreat from that in every way and to endeavour for coming to the right practical course.

The activity, which is unavoidable and which has been destined to be undertaken, of course without attachment, constitutes the right practical course... (232)

"Resort To Devotion Of The Enlightened...."

-"Though the enlightened do not have desire for devotion, the liberation-seeker cannot grasp the teachings without resorting to it and his learning does not lead to contemplation and pondering over at depth.

The saints have therefore said that it is essential for a liberation-seeker to resort to devotion of the enlightened.

Directives given in the scriptures are remote; they are meant for enabling the soul to be deserving.

For attaining liberation one has to resort to the evident commands of enlightened.

This is the order on the path of liberation.

It is not possible to attain it in any other way.

One, who resorts to that secret, obviously gets the ambrosia and become fearless..." (200)

"Everyone Has To Wander In The Worldly Life By Virtue Of His Karma..."

Shrimadji said... "I am pointing out some queer phenomena by pondering over which you would gain faith in reincarnation.

One lies in the bed of roses, another does not even a tattered quilt;

one enjoys variety of tasty foods, another hardly gets even a piece of bread;

one avails of unlimited wealth, another has to beg for a penny;

one fascinates the mind with his sweet tongue, another stays a dumb;

one adorns the body with fancy clothes, another does not get even the rags to cover his body in extreme cold;

one is afflicted with disease, another is hale and hearty;

one is intelligent, another is blunt;

one has bright eyes, another is blind, lame or limp;

one gets credit, another is discredited;

one exercises authority over thousands, another is tossed everywhere;

one radiates joy, another is repellent;

one is equipped with the sound organs, another is handicapped;

one does not have even the concept of poverty or distress, another sees no end to his misery;

one lives for hundred years, another is aborted, still born or dies soon after the birth.

No faces are identical; languages and conditions also differ.

A fool on the throne is hailed with flattering words, while a learned may have to wander here and there.

You can notice the various types of anomalies prevailing in the world.

Does that make you think?

If yes, let me know why that happens.

Otherwise let me tell you that it is due to the wholesome or unwholesome Karma.

Everyone has to wander in the worldly life by virtue of his Karma.

One, who does not believe in rebirth, need to account for such anomalies.

If he ponders over, he also would have to admit what the theory of Karma states..."(3)

"Salvage The Soul From The Worldly Sea..."

"The essence of what has been repeatedly said here is, 'salvage the soul from the worldly sea; for that purpose foster the philosophical knowledge and resort to virtuous conduct.'

The path indicated in that respect rests on control over mind. For gaining that control it is necessary to have a broad outlook.

The following faults work as handicaps in cultivating that out look.

 1. Laziness.
 2. Irregular sleep.
 3. Excessive food intake.
 4. Infatuation.
 5. Deception.
 6. Irregular work.
 7. Unbecoming indulgence.
 8. Ego.
 9. Excessive work.
10. Vanity.
11. Indulging in trivial enjoyment.
12. Deep inclination for tastes.
13. Excessive indulgence.
14 Wishing evil of others.
15. Purposeless earning.
16. Affection for too many.
17. Visiting wrong places.
18. Not to observe any regulation.

Control over mind and attainment of desirable objective can be accomplished by getting rid of these 18 faults.

The mind will stay inclined towards such faults so long as eighteen abodes of sinful activities are not removed.

No one can gain beneficence of soul so long as these faults stay in mind.

He is very fortunate, who has not merely removed excessive indulgence, but has also vowed to avoid all sort of indulgences and does not harbor any fault at heart..."(100)

"The Soul Has Remained Intoxicated With The Drink Of Delusion..."

"Lord Tirthankar states that to talk adversely about the enlightened or to feel glorified about that is the cause of extending the worldly life infinitely.

The lord states that to adore the attributes of the enlightened, to feel glorified by such events, and to behave straightforwardly and vigilantly as per his commands lead to destruction of the infinite worldly life.

Jain scriptures contain these words.

Many people might be hearing those words.

Very few are, however, seen, who might have rendered the first sentence fruitless and the second fruitful.

On infinite occasions the worldly soul has fructified the first and rendered the second useless.

One does not take time in coming within the clutches of that mode, because the soul has remained intoxicated with the drink of delusion.

As such, it is necessary to repeatedly think over and to prevail under the circumstances concerned as per above-mentioned second mode with all possible vigour. (397)

"Immersed In The Stream Of Detachment..."

When Shrimadji initially became known as Shatavdhani (simultaneously attending to 100 activities), many reputed persons of Bombay came in His contact.

The Parsee gentleman Tata, who was known for his generous donations, took Him around his building and narrated at length about the furniture and other articles of comforts imported from U.K.

On such occasions it is natural to expect the words of praise for the property or splendour and the visitors generally do so.

The great men, however, remain immersed in the stream of detachment, even when they are dealing with trivial matters.

Hence their words result in changing the life style of other people.

After seeing the building, shrimadji simply uttered, 'Who will avail this?'

Many people present there might have heard those words, but they touched Tata to the bottom of his heart.

He had no child.

Thinking that all the people of his community were his children, he transferred his property to a Trust prior to his death and entrusted the entire property to the Trustees for use in benevolent purposes.

"Every Liberation Seeker Needs To Keep This In Mind..."

Liberation is within easy reach by boldly treading the path of the enlightened without indulging in despondency.

When sensual inclination, defilement etc. become too strong, a thinking person grieves highly to notice his loss of vigour and repeatedly hates himself.

Looking at it with abhorrence again and again, he resorts to the words and character of the saintly people and generates vigour within.

By forcefully exerting that vigour he overcomes the sensual inclination etc. and does not sit at rest till then.

The self-seekers have resorted to that very mode and have succeeded in the end.

Every liberation seeker needs to keep this in mind and set it firmly at heart."(819)

"Harbour a Desire For Self-Enquiry..."

Letter written by Shrimad Rajchandraji to Mahatma Gandhi

Mumbai Fagan Vad 5, Saturday, 1951

To Shri Mohanlal, Durban.

Have received your letter.

As worldly entanglements are renounced, tranquility manifests. As worldly entanglements are assumed, the inner bliss is disturbed. Upon reflection, this fact can be experienced clearly.

Even a slight analysis about the objects of the world cannot but lead to dispassion towards them, because it is only lack of analysis that causes attachment towards them.

'The 'Soul exists',
'the Soul is eternal',
'the Soul is the doer of karma',
'the Soul is the enjoyer of karma',
'the Soul can attain liberation from it', and
'there are means to attain liberation':

when these six fundamental truths are realised after deliberation, that should be considered as the attainment of the power of discrimination or samayakdarshan (right belief) according to the Jina.

This exposition should be studied in depth by spiritual aspirants.

The contemplation of these six fundamental truths arises through the deep impressions of the past or because of the influence of satsang.

Due to a sense of attachment towards impermanent things, the existence, permanence, and uninhibited bliss of the Soul cannot be comprehended.

Since time immemorial the soul is so engrossed in its attachment that through gradual discrimination, eventually the bewildered soul has to return. And before the knot of delusion could be severed, often in the past, this discrimination has been given up. Because without intense effort, that which has been practised since time immemorial cannot be given up in short span.

Therefore, repeatedly through satsang, scriptures and by cultivating deep contemplation; intense efforts should be made towards this.

The result of which is the dawn of the permanent, eternal, blissful Self-realisation.

The rising doubts are calmed through patience and contemplation. By impatience or through weird imagination the soul loses the opportunity of its own upliftment and because of attachment to impermanent things, it is again and again subjected to cycles of birth and death.

Knowing that you harbour a desire for self-enquiry gives me great pleasure. In this pleasure, there is no selfishness.

Your wish to embark on the path of inner bliss will bring you the opportunity to get liberated from the agonies of the world.

Seeing such possibility, I naturally feel joyous. That alone is my recommendation.

Salutations to the Divinity in you.

"What Does It Mean To Have Done Satsang? "

"What does it mean to have done satsang?

What should the state of a person be as a result of satsang?

Please consider that.

Five years of satsang certainly should bear fruit and one should act accordingly.

These actions should be solely for one's own benefit, and not to impress others.

One's actions must be such that people are convinced that the One he has met is an Enlightened Being.

And since this is the outcome of meeting and doing satsang with this Enlightened Being, there is no doubt that it is satsang..." (updeshchhaya -3)

"Recognizing The Enlightened Being..."

Factors that come in the way of recognizing the enlightened:-

"There are three major faults in preventing the people from recognizing the enlightened being;

one is the ego in the form of 'I know, I understand it' that prevails within.

The second is the greater attachment for the possessions than that towards the enlightened.

The third is turning the face against the enlightened or not to revere them properly because of the fear of popular belief, disgrace or condemnation.

These three factors keep one away from the enlightened.

He considers them like himself; he weighs the thinking of the enlightened and the scriptural precepts on his own scale.

On getting even a slight knowledge from books, he tends to display it in various ways.

All such drawbacks are covered within the above-mentioned three faults and wrong contact is the instrumental cause thereof... (416)

"Drink The Nectar Of True Knowledge..."

"In this interminable and meaningless world, obtaining a virtuous human birth is not only difficult but indeed very rare.

Oh atman! Now that you have acquired this human life by mere coincidence, you should work towards the accomplishment of your rightful duty.

It is not possible to ascertain your true identity in any other life besides this human life, hence this recommendation.

Shri jina enjoins that right faith, knowledge and right conduct are the causes of liberation.

So one who aspires to be free, considers right faith, right knowledge and right conduct as the only instruments for moksh (liberation).

Implicit in these instruments is meditation.

That is why, to expound on the significance of meditation, it is said, 'oh atman, to destroy the miseries of the world, drink the nectar of true knowledge and to sail across the ocean of the world, embark on the ship of meditation..."

"Enlightened World View (Darshan), Enlightened Knowledge (Gyana) And Enlightened Conduct (Charitra)"

One day Shrimadji put this question to Muni Chaturlalji:

'what restrictions did you accept for yourself from the day you took the vow of self-restraint till now?'

Now Shri Chaturlalji had realized that the monks most often wasted their time in sheer laxity.

So he candidly confessed the truth.

He said 'In the morning we collect tea for ourselves and take it first thing. next, we collect some snuff, and take in pinch of it.

We next go around collecting for our morning meal and having eaten whatever we are given freely by householders, we retire for our noonday rest.

In the evening we perform the ritual of pratikraman, and finally go to bed.'

Shrimadji now said, with a touch of good-humour, 'Do all great ideals such as enlightened world view (darshan), enlightened knowledge (gyana) and enlightened conduct (charitra), boil down to these mundane activities, taking tea and a pinch of snuff, and morning meals and finally retiring to bed.'

Shrimadji next offered some words of pious reflection to Shri Lalluji and made recommendation: 'You ought to encourage other monks to give up their laxity and devote their time to reading scriptures and to religious studies.

Again, all of you should take meals only once in a day, and should avoid receiving tea and snuff and such trifles.

You must devote yourselves to the study of Sanskrit.'

On hearing these words, Muni Shri Mohanlalji said, 'Maharajshri and Devkaranji are both of an advanced age, and there is little scope for them to devote themselves to studies.'

Shrimadji said, 'They must devote themselves to studies whenever the opportunity arises.

You have before you the example of Queen Victoria of England who is also of quite an advanced age and yet devotes her time to the study of foreign languages.'
